Synthetic rubber is produced by the polymerization of petroleum-derived monomers. Most synthetic rubbers are made up of two or more monomers and hence have the desired superior properties. There are over 200 varieties of synthetic rubber available. The most consumed forms of synthetic rubber include butadiene rubber (BR), acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). Synthetic rubber has been replacing natural rubber (NR) in a variety of applications due to its inherent advantages in terms of its stability and physical properties. Moreover, the supply of natural rubber is weakening, which makes prices highly volatile. In light of this situation, it is imperative that an alternate source to NR is developed and this comes about in the form of natural rubber.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of synthetic rubber owing to large production plants for tire and other products. The U.S., Japan, Korea, and Germany follow China in terms of consumption. Among the various applications, tire manufacturing is the largest consumer of synthetic rubber. However, there has been increasing use of synthetic rubber in footwear and construction. The geographical segmentation of the market includes North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and MENA.

The substantial growth in the market is primarily due to the growth of the automotive industry and the growing demand for tires. Moreover, the growing disposable income levels have further boosted the demand for other applications like footwear and construction. Also, natural rubber has created big crossover opportunities for the development of the synthetic market.  Being petroleum derived, synthetic rubber experiences similar price volatility as its raw materials like naphtha, ethylene and benzene. In addition to this, the environmental concerns about crude oil and its derivative could hamper the development of the market.

China is expected to drive the demand for synthetic rubber due to its vast product manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, China has the world’s largest automotive industry and is expected to maintain its position over the next six years. The demand for high performance tires due to the labeling regulations in countries like Japan, Korea, and EU has led to the growth in Solution-SBR (S-SBR) demand. S-SBR is expected to gain a substantial market share over the next six years. Lanxess is the world’s largest manufacturer of synthetic rubber and has over 30 production sites across the world. Some other major players in the market include Dow Chemicals, Sinopec, Versalis, Asahi Kasei, and Synthos S.A among others.

Thermoformed plastics are plastics used in the process of thermoforming where a plastic sheet is heated to a bendable form so that the plastic can be molded into a desired shape which is then cooled to form a finished usable product. There are different types of processes available for thermoforming plastics, the common ones being plug assist forming, vacuum snapback and thick and thin gauge thermoforming. The regularly used polymers for thermoforming include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), polypropylene (PP) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) among others. These plastics have applications in food packaging, electronics, pharmaceuticals and toiletries.

The key driver for thermoformed plastics is their large application base in the food packaging industry. The main requirement for the food packaging industry is a superior barrier to bacteria, odor and moisture to the food product, which is provided by thermoformed plastics. In addition, it is used in manufacture of pharmaceutical articles. Thermoformed plastics are cost effective and thus, they are used in a wide range of applications. Plastics used in thermoforming are petrochemical based polymers.

The key restraint to the thermoformed plastics market is the fluctuation in the prices of the raw materials used. High labor cost of manufacturing thermoplastics also affects the market of thermoformed plastics. In addition, during the thermoforming process, precise wall thickness is difficult to achieve along with uniform thickness all across the product. This results in less durability and less weight bearing capacity of the plastic product. Thus, manufacturers look for substitutions to thermoformed polymers.

Changing lifestyle and increasing disposable income of consumers in countries such as China and India will affect the food packaging in this region. This in turn will affect the thermoforming plastics market in this region. In addition, there is an increasing scope of application of thermoforming process as manufacturers are looking at replacing injection molding process by thermoforming process due to the lower tooling costs and high-speed production.

Some of the major manufacturers in the thermoformed plastic industry include Anchor Packaging, Pactiv, Associated Packaging Technologies, Peninsula Packaging, Placon Corporation, Tegrant, Genpak and CM Packaging.

The growth of accidents and the loss of assets caused due to fire on a global scale is one of the major factors driving the demand for passive fire protection materials. The global market for passive fire protection material is witnessing tremendous growth since the last decade. Some of the basic types of passive fire protection material used by the construction industry to prevent fire in buildings include fire doors, fire resisting cables, fire linings, fire resisting partitions, fire resisting glass, fire screens etc.

The global market for passive fire protection materials is expected to grow at a double digit rate over the next six years. The market is primarily driven by the increase in incidences of fire related accidents on a global scale. The death toll caused due to fire accidents was estimated to be over 12,000 in the U.S., over 6,800 in Europe and more than 50,000 in the Asia Pacific region per year till 2010.  The loss of assets caused due fire accidents was approximately USD 90 billion globally in 2010. So in order to decrease these figures, the world is shifting its focus towards the use of passive fire protection materials which help in minimizing the accidents caused due to fire.

However, the market is highly dependent on the health of the economies in various regions.
The global market for passive fire protection materials is considered to be highly fragmented with a large number of participants operating in the global market and enjoying almost equal amount of market share. Asia Pacific holds immense opportunities for the players operating in the market owing to a steady growth in the construction industry, mainly in emerging economies of China and India. China and India are two of the fastest growing economies of the world whose GDP growth rates are increasing at a faster pace than the global GDP growth rate.  The rapid rate of construction in Eastern Europe is also expected to drive the market over the next six years.

Some of the major companies operating in the global market for passive fire protection materials include ADT Fire & Security, Cooper Industries, GE Security, and Honeywell Inc.

The sol-gel method is a cost-effective and convenient way to prepare mono and multicomponent glasses and ceramics, some of which would not be possible to be used by conventional processes. This is because of the use of homogeneous liquid solutions and the ability to form gels at room temperature. Sol-gel processing refers to the low temperature method using chemical precursors which in turn leads to ceramics and glass with higher purity and better homogeneity than high temperature conventional processes.

The applications of sol-derived products are numerous, and one of the major applications is in coatings and thin films used in electronic, optical and electro-optic components and devices such as substrates, capacitors, memory devices, and infrared detectors. Anti-reflection coatings are used for automotive and architectural applications. Sol-gel can also be used to infiltrate fiber performs to make composites.

Glass coatings and inorganic/organic hybrids have potential optical applications including optical filters, chemical sensors, passive and nonlinear active waveguides, and lasers. Moreover, biomedical applications have been incorporated in the sol-gel matrices. Applications include biochemical processes monitoring, environmental testing, food processing, and drug delivery for medicine or agriculture. Other biomedical applications include coatings for metal implants and bone grafting materials. Cosmetic applications include sunscreen lotions and makeup that have UV absorbers.
